Sandy Ewen/Steve Jansen

Sandy Ewen/Steve Jansen

Sandy Ewen/Steve Jansen is a Texas-based electro-acoustic music duo that stresses a compatible non-linear approach to improvised music. Ewen’s prepared guitar vocabulary engraves with Jansen’s analog tape manipulation discourse, resulting in an intuitive, winding performance. Ewen works in the pickups register of her guitar, using chalk, metal implements scavenged in the outdoors, and cat toys while Jansen produces skitters and drone tones using his original compositions, which have been recorded onto cassette tapes, that are then manipulated live via electronics. Sandy Ewen is an experimental guitarist, artist and architect based in Houston TX. She has performed alongside Roscoe Mitchell, Keith Rowe, Lydia Lunch and many others, and has albums with Weasel Walter, Jaap Blonk, Henry Kaiser, Damon Smith and more. In 2014 she performed at San Francisco's 13th Annual Outsound New Music Summit, and she has made several appearances at Austin's annual No Idea Festival. Her groups Garden medium, Spiderwebs, Etched in the Eye & Ewen/Smith/Walter all released albums in 2016. Ewen's approach to playing is centered around found objects and extended guitar techniques. Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Steve Jansen is a Texas-based experimentalist (and not Steve Jansen, the drummer from Japan!) whose musical pursuits focus on tape manipulation, alto saxophone, and electric guitar. Jansen has traveled extensively throughout Africa, Latin America, Europe, and across the States to unearth sound, and these recordings play a significant role in his unique sonic constructions. Jansen has toured with John Wiese (Sissy Spacek) and performed/collaborated with Rob Mazurek, Henry Kaiser, Jeph Jerman, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Jamison Williams, The Home of Easy Credit, Tim Daisy, James Fella, Chris Cogburn, Damon Smith, Sandy Ewen, and Whoopi Pupi. Along with a solo project, he’s a member of SSBT, Friendship Cemetery, War Boner, Randall Cunningham Dance Company, and Holy Ghost Trio. His music can be found on Astral Spirits/Monofonus Press, Gilgongo Records, Deadline Recordings, Self Sabotage Records/Super Secret Records, Instincto Records, and Subjazz.
