So far, so Giraffe: for a while the Hamburg based project Giraffe loved short musical expressions. On their debut album "Juni" for the Belgium label Meakusma, most tunes stopped living after three minutes. On their latest recordings for the Berlin based hard to pigeonhole label Marmo, they took the epic road and produced two arrangements that drift long and adventurous. A stretched musical path, that makes their outcome even more magnetic, more bewitching. With Climate a new member becomes part of their ongoing mission to find new sounds beyond cliché-ridden textures.
Sascha Demand, Jürgen Hall and Charly Schöppner, a partnership with an admirable CV of music creation, came together to create Climate. Their disparate ideas, different influences and inspirations, are married by the common theme of instantaneous invention. "Climate 1" and "Climate 2" are born in a jungle of instruments during live jam studio sessions, sessions where textures and tones are unfettered to flow and form without borders or boundaries. The result are two pieces where no line is set. Melodies meander and melt on a quicksand of percussion. Notes take shape before being painted over. Layers are built and then disappear. Reference points are blurred and ultimately buried by these Hamburg audio guides. The triumvirate complement one another, working off each other to sketch in similar shades whilst allowing margins to bulge and split as new lines are penned and played.
Supported are Giraffe on this night by the live sound acts of Tintin Patrone and Hoffmann & Huthwelker. Tintin Patrone ist a German-Filipino composer and sound-artist based in Hamburg. Her minimal sound work and long duration performances are essentially shaped by her studies in Just Intonation and music making animals like the chanting huskies from Yukon Territory, Canada or the Thai Elephant Orchestra from Northern Thailand. Hoffmann & Huthwelker are two multi spaced Hamburg producers/sound scapers who will use their scampy drum samplers and glowing analogue cirquits as midwinter heat sources. Don't miss.
